Featuring a 1978 Chevy Corvette, this year’s medal pays tribute to our long history. From finish lines on Belle Isle to our current course, we are proud to call the Motor City our home!
Back in 1978 when the Detroit Free Press acquired the Detroit Marathon from the Motor City Striders, the race was solely run on Belle Isle. Placed geographically on top of Belle Isle, our “retro” logo symbolizes where the race started.
Throughout the city our current course is highlighted with a white line – we now traverse two international crossings and many of Detroit’s beautiful neighborhoods.
Detroit’s main streets are also highlighted in the medal, reaching out into the neighboring communities in Southeast Michigan. After a fire tore through Detroit in 1805, Elias Brevoort Woodward designed the city in a ‘hub-and-spoke’ fashion. Michigan, Grand River, Woodward and Gratiot are called out by name in our medal – these streets connect us to our runners, wherever they may be.
Every finisher will receive a medal (5K and Kids Fun Run included)! The medal size will differ for the distance of the event and each event will have a custom ribbon showcasing the distance.
